What is a Biopsy?

A biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from an area of concern in the mouth, such as a lesion, lump, or sore. The tissue sample is sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination to determine the presence of benign conditions, infections, or potentially serious issues like oral cancer.

Biopsies are typically recommended when a patient presents with unusual changes in the oral tissues that do not resolve on their own or when routine oral screenings reveal abnormalities requiring further investigation.

Common Reasons for a Biopsy

  • Persistent Sores or Ulcers: Non-healing areas in the mouth.
  • Unusual Lumps or Bumps: Growths that are firm or irregular.
  • Discolored Patches: White, red, or mixed areas of tissue.
  • Swelling or Pain: Localized discomfort without an apparent cause.

Consultation and Evaluation

The process begins with a thorough oral examination. Advanced imaging techniques, such as X-rays or CT scans, may be used to assess the problem area. If a biopsy is deemed necessary, we’ll explain the procedure in detail and address any questions or concerns.

The area of concern is cleaned, and a local anesthetic is administered to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Using precise surgical tools, a small sample of tissue is carefully removed from the affected area. Depending on the location and size of the abnormality, this may involve:

  • Excisional Biopsy: Complete removal of the lesion.
  • Incisional Biopsy: Removal of a small portion of the lesion.

The tissue sample is preserved and sent to a pathology laboratory for detailed analysis.

After the biopsy, the area may be closed with sutures, and you’ll receive instructions on how to care for the site. Mild discomfort is common, but it typically resolves within a few days.

Once the pathology results are available, we’ll discuss the findings and recommend next steps, which may include additional treatment if necessary.
